The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9-11
Commission), an independent, bipartisan commission created by congressional legislation and
the signature of President George W. Bush in late 2002, is chartered to prepare a full and
complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks,
including preparedness for and the immediate response to the attacks. The Commission is also
mandated to provide recommendations designed to guard against future attacks.

The September 11 Digital Archive uses electronic media to collect, preserve, and present the
history of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and the public
responses to them. Funded by a major grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and organized by
the American Social History Project at the City University of New York Graduate Center and the
Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, the Digital Archive will contribute
to the on-going effort by historians and archivists to record and preserve the record of 9/11.

The Library of Congress (www.loc.gov) commissioned
the archive and organized its collection and development. The Internet Archive (www.archive.org)
archived the web sites included in this collection, and hosts the collected materials. WebArchivist.org (www.webarchivist.org)
developed the september11.archive.org web site, identified web materials to be preserved in the collection, and generates data about the web sites in the archive.

Families of September 11 is a non-profit organization founded by families of those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Membership is also open to the families of people who die in related acts of terrorism, such as the anthrax attacks. Others interested in advancing the organization's goals may join as associate members.
