      For Walter Baran

You may be many miles away from me today, but you will never be beyond the reach of my love. You will always be a part of me. Because our time together is stored in our memory…

Walter, my one and only true love, you'll forever be in my heart.
-Love, Carol

Daddy, we love you too. Forever Valentine.
-Love, Stephanie and Samantha

Wally,
I've learned so much about life from Walter Baran. A few short sentences could hardly do him justice. In reference to how sports heroes are elected into the Hall of Fame, I often told Wally he was going to heaven on the first ballot.

There's one story that really sticks out for me. Many years ago Wally went to a baseball game and one of the ball players refused to sign autographs. A man who was with them asked the ball player, "You know what your problem is? You forgot what it's like to be a kid."

Wally never forgot how to be a kid. He was responsible, dedicated and often quiet. Yet, he could often be innocently mischievous. It was as if he felt that finding an instance where he could genuinely feel the wonder and humor of a child were the precious moments of life. The little things were sacred. Christmas was his holiday and he spent an afternoon every year putting up a Christmas tree on his desk. You had to take time out for the little things.

First ballot for heaven indeed.
